About The Role

Job Description

The Thames Water Shared Apprenticeship Scheme are looking for a Apprentice Utilities Technician, The role will mainly be based in the Thames Valley with regular travel to sites between oxford/Aylesbury & Reading. Although the course will focus on all three aspects of the Utilities Technician course this role will be focused on the Mechanical side.  

Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering Technicians play a critical role in maintaining safe and efficient site operations by performing both reactive and routine checks and installations on systems and equipment. They may specialise in one of three main disciplines: Electrical, Mechanical, or Instrumentation Control and Automation (ICA). For this Thames Water role, the main discipline will be mechanical.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Utilities Engineering Technician, typical responsibilities include:

  • Conducting inspections, condition monitoring, and reporting to ensure equipment functionality.
  • Performing planned, reactive, and predictive maintenance on plant and equipment.
  • Diagnosing and rectifying faults on a range of systems, including waste and water systems.
  • Complying with relevant industry health, safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
  • Using workshop machinery and tools for creating, repairing, and modifying components.
  • Installing, maintaining, and commissioning equipment and components.
  • Carrying out risk assessments and following safe working practices, including isolation procedures.
  • Using computer systems and technical specifications to diagnose and maintain equipment.
  • Providing information and guidance to contractors, suppliers, and colleagues.

Specialist Roles:

  • Mechanical: Maintenance and diagnostics of mechanical systems, motors, pumps, and components, as well as basic fabrication and welding.
  • Electrical: Maintenance, testing, and diagnostics of electrical systems, including low-voltage equipment, PLCs, and SCADA systems.
  • Instrumentation Control and Automation (ICA): Calibration, maintenance, and fault-finding in telemetry, instrumentation, and control systems.
 
Typical Working Week:

40 hours per week, with start times typically between 07:00 and 08:00. This includes 8 hours of paid college time.
 

Key Training/College Information

  • Apprentices will complete a Level 3 Utilities Engineering Technician Apprenticeship over approximately 48 months, depending on prior qualifications.
  • Training will focus on core engineering skills and specialized disciplines as required.
  • Apprentices without Level 2 English and Mathematics must achieve these before completion.

Desired Requirements:

  • Relevant work experience and a passion for the utilities engineering sector.
  • A valid CSCS/ECS card is advantageous.

Minimum Requirements:

  • GCSEs: 3 to 5 passes (grades A-C / 4-9), including Mathematics and English or Functional Skills at Level 2 or above.
  • Must have a full UK drivers’ licence and access to a vehicle.

Eligibility:

  • Have lived in England for the past 3 years and possess the right to work.
  • Be 18+ (due to site health and safety rules).
  • Not be enrolled in any other courses.
